MONTICELLO- The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s Student Government Association recently started a petition for a fall commencement. UAM presently hosts only one commencement per year; it is held at the end of the spring semester.

tv_News 10dbSGA President Taylor Norris explains, “According to the information I gathered from the registrar, in the fall of 2013 UAM had 372 graduates including associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s; it’s all three. On the unofficial report of fall 2014, we had 227 graduates.”

Norris, a senior Business Marketing major at UAM, will finish her degree program in the fall of 2015.

“We compared numbers to surrounding and competing schools, and what we found was each one of the schools we compared to had a fall commencement,” said Norris.

The Student Government team produced the petition and gathered 87 signatures. The petition is currently residing with the Executive Council, where it will be decided upon.

Payton Miller, a senior Natural Science major, said, “I think I should be entitled to a fall commencement because I want that special moment of being able to walk down the aisle in my cap and gown and receive my diploma without have to wait an extra semester.”

Norris eagerly awaits the Executive Council’s response.
