Mike Early To Be Honored By Little Rock Touchdown Club

MONTICELLO – Senior cornerback Mike Early will be honored as the University of Arkansas-Monticello’s most valuable player at the annual Little Rock Touchdown Club Awards Banquet Wednesday night, featuring guest speaker Michael Irvin.

Wednesday’s banquet is set to start with at 6 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in West Little Rock. Early is one of 12 student-athletes to be recognized from each of the Arkansas colleges and universities. The LRTDC will also recognize its special awards winners, including the Cliff Harris Award, the Dan Hampton Award, the Willie Roaf Award and the Paul Eels Award.

tv Sports reflection 10dbIn addition to the college awards presented, the club will also recognize the player and coach of the year for each Arkansas high school classification before turning the floor over to Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin for the keynote address. Early culminated his collegiate career this past fall with several accolades, including three all-region teams as a cornerback and two all-region teams as a return specialist. He was also an all-conference selection at each position.

The Denham Springs, Louisiana native ranked second in the Great American Conference this season in passes defended with 12. He had four interceptions for a combined total of 111 return yards, including one return for a touchdown. He had two interceptions for 68 yards and a touchdown against Southwestern Oklahoma State at home and two interceptions for 43 yards against Southern Nazarene on the road.

In addition to his defensive numbers, Early finished the regular season ranked first in the conference and 25th in the nation in kickoff return yards. He totaled 12 returns for 322 yards, averaging out to 28.6 yards per attempt. He took two kickoff returns to the end zone in the season opener against East Central, and is just one of only 10 players in the nation to have more than one kickoff return for a score.

Early was a two-time GAC player of the week this season, once for special teams and once for defense. He also was named D2Football.com National Special Teams Player of the Week for his two returns for touchdowns against ECU.
