Blossoms Score Senior Day Sweep

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s volleyball team collected a three-set sweep over Lyon College Tuesday night in the team’s final home match of the 2014 season.

For seniors Jessica Cuba and Tasha Evans, it was the last home match of the their collegiate careers. Each played a key role in Tuesday night’s win. Cuba totaled seven kills and only two errors on 21 swings for a .238 individual percentage, while also added four digs and two block assists in the win. Evans posted five kills and no errors on 16 swings for a .312 percentage, while adding three block assists to her totals.

tv Sports reflection 10dbFinal game scores in the victory were 25-9, 25-22 and 25-17. The Blossoms improve to 14-13, while Lyon drops to 12-20.

The Blossoms were dominant throughout the first set and closed the frame on a 9-1 run off the serve of senior Jessica Cuba. The Scots responded with a close second set, which featured 15 tied scores and eight lead changes. UAM used two attack errors and a service error from Lyon to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match. UAM got up early in the third set and led by at least four points for the final 25 rallies.

In total, UAM had 32 kills and 13 errors on 96 swings for a .196 percentage. Lyon countered with 25 kills and 24 errors on 104 swings for a .010 percentage.

Cuba’s seven kills led the Blossoms, followed by freshman Aubrey Harrison and junior Sydni Schulz with six each and Evans at five. Junior Lani Kaiwi paced the back row with 12 digs. Junior Kaila Kikugawa and sophomore Brittney Beckham each reached the double-digit mark in assists with 16 and 10, respectively. Junior Bianca Brown led the blocking effort with three block assists and one solo.

Lyon’s Katarina Frickleton led all players with eight kills.

The Blossoms head to Russellville on Thursday for the final Great American Conference match of the regular season to face off against league-leading Arkansas Tech. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum.
