MONTICELLO — The Music Theater Workshop at the University of Arkansas at Monticello will present “The Stoned Guest,” a half-act opera by P.D.Q. Bach, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury” November 21-22 at 7:30 p.m. at the UAM Fine Arts Center. The performances are free and open to the public.
“The Stoned Guest” was written by musical satirist Peter Schickele using the name P.D.Q. Bach, a fictitious composer and the “forgotten son’ of the Bach family. The opera’s title was taken from Alexander Dargomyzhsky’s “The Stone Guest,” an 1872 opera. Schickele’s version, released in 1970, is a parody of classical opera and includes a dog in a prominent role.
