Men’s Basketball Picked 11th In GAC Preseason Poll

RUSSELLVILLE – The Great American Conference men’s basketball coaches have picked the University of Arkansas at Monticello to finish last in the 2014-15 season, announced Wednesday by the league office.

Arkansas Tech received eight of the 11 first place votes to earn the top spot in the preseason poll. The Wonder Boys earned 96 polls points, ahead of Harding at 86, Southwestern Oklahoma State at 79, East Central at 70, Henderson State at 65, Southern Nazarene at 48, Ouachita Baptist at 42, Southeastern Oklahoma State at 34, Southern Arkansas at 32, Northwestern Oklahoma State at 29 and UAM at 24.

tv Sports reflection 10dbThe Weevils are coming off the program’s third straight top three finish in the GAC and seventh straight winning season with a 19-10 overall record and a 12-8 mark in GAC games last year. UAM was regionally ranked heading into the conference championship tournament at the end of the year, but fell to Henderson State 65-61 in the opening round.

UAM returns four letter winners from last year’s squad, including guard Sharif Hudson, who averaged 10.1 points per game in 29 contests. First-year head coach Kyle Tolin has brought in eight newcomers for the 2014-15 season.

The 2014-15 season begins on Friday, November 14 with a road trip to Denton, Texas for an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I North Texas before returning to Monticello the next day for the home opener against Champion Baptist. All roads lead to Bartlesville, Oklahoma once again for the GAC Championship Tournament March 5-8.
