UAM Volleyball Rallies To Beat Ouachita At Home

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s volleyball team trailed in all four sets against Ouachita Baptist at home Thursday night and rallied to win three of them for the team’s fourth Great American Conference victory of the season.

After falling in the first set 25-17, UAM fought back from early and late deficits in the next three sets to win 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23 for the four-set victory. The Blossoms improve to 9-9 overall and 4-5 in GAC matches, while Ouachita drops to 10-6 overall and 3-5 in the GAC.

tv Sports reflection 10dbOuachita scored the first six points of the second set before the Blossoms eventually rallied to force a 15-all tie on a kill from senior Tasha Evans.Ouachita answered later by taking a 23-20 lead and held set point three rallies later before UAM scored four straight to event the match at one set each. UAM’s final three points came off the serve of junior Lani Kaiwi and included kills from sophomore Kedra Johnson and freshman Aubrey Harrison.

In the third set, Ouachita got out on top 10-5 in the early going and led for the majority of the frame until UAM outscored the Tigers 9-2 in the final 11 rallies to take a 2-1 set lead. UAM posted streaks of four and three straight points in the final comeback of the set.

The Tigers looked to be in control again early in the fourth set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Tigers were up 23-18 when UAM final its final surge, scoring seven straight off the serve of junior Sydni Schulz to seal the match victory.

Harrison tied OBU’s Kori Bullard for the match-high in kills with 16 each. The 16 kills for Harrison marks a new career-high. The Conroe, Texas native posted only four errors on 39 swings for a .308 percentage in her first match back in action since September 27.

Schulz also reached double-digits in kills for the third straight match with 13, while also posting 17 digs for her fourth straight double-double and sixth overall of the season.

Sophomore Brittney Beckham posted a new career-high with 32 assists in the victory, while junior Jessica Cuba added 10. Junior Lani Kaiwi also posted a new career-high with 20 digs against Ouachita on Thursday night.

UAM posted 10 total blocks in the victory, led by Cuba’s eight block assists, also a career-high.

The Blossoms are back in action on Tuesday, October 14 with a road trip to face off against Harding. The Lady Bisons swept UAM at home earlier in the season. Tuesday’s first serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Rhodes Field House in Searcy.
