Rangers Hold Off Weevils, 34-28

ALVA, Oklahoma – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s football team suffered its third straight loss to start the season by less than seven points in a tv Sports reflection 10db34-28 setback to Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday at Ranger Field.

The Weevils (0-3) rallied to take a 28-27 lead with just under two minutes remaining in regulation on a fourth-down touchdown pass from junior Hunter Leppert to junior Cody Bordelon to cap an eight-play, 62-yard drive that used 2:32.

The Rangers (1-2) answered in 1:24 on a six-play, 75-yard drive capped by afive-yard touchdown run from Jarion Tudman. With 32 seconds left in the game, the Weevils went 36 yards on six plays, but a last-second pass into the endzone intended for senior Deadrien Terry was batted down to seal the win.

Both teams scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half after NWOSU took a 20-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

NWOSU’s Malcolm Robinson opened the scoring at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play, 64-yard drive that used 5:20. The point-after attempt went left, which eventually led to UAM taking a one-point lead in the fourth quarter.

UAM answered late in the first quarter to take the lead on an eight-yard touchdown run by senior Rod Smith on an eight-play, 67-yard drive that used3:14.

The Rangers finalized the first quarter scoring on a 33-yard touchdown passfrom Ty Hooper to Dashawn Gordon with 34 seconds remaining in the period.

UAM regained the lead on a 15-play, 93-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Leppert to senior Steven Richmond with 6:04 remaining until halftime. NWOSU answered with a six-play, 80-yard drive and a seven-yard touchdown run by Tudman to finalize the first half scoring.

The Rangers were the only team to get on the scoreboard in the third quarter. NWOSU dialed up a trick-play, double pass from Alex DeLaCruz to a wide-open Reggie Harris for a 27-yard touchdown. That put Northwestern up 27-14 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

UAM rattled off two straight touchdowns to regain the lead, the first a 14-yard quarterback keeper into the end zone by Leppert at the 5:32 mark of the fourth quarter. After forcing NWOSU to punt on its next drive, the Weevils set up its go ahead drive, featuring Leppert’s pass to Bordelon at the goal line on fourth down.

The Weevils edged the Rangers in total offense 393-379. Northwestern won the rushing battle 203-99, while UAM posted a 294-176 edge in passing. Leppert finished the game 22-for-38 through the air with exactly 300 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked four times in the loss. Bordelon finished with six catches for 62 yards and senior Ivory Washington had five catches for 81 yards. Senior Deadrien Terry ended with four catches for 71 yards.

Cornerback Demarcus Robinson paced the UAM defense with nine total tackles.Andrew Jackson and Louis Curry had five and four tackles, respectively, and one quarterback sack each.

The Weevils are back at home next Saturday, September 27 to face off against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.
