Weevils 4th In Initial NCAA Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Heading into the final weekend of the 2014 regular season, the University of Arkansas-tv Sports reflection 10dbMonticello’s baseball team has been ranked No. 4 in the initial NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.

UAM is one of three teams representing the Great American Conference in thefirst published rankings of the year. Arkansas Tech is ranked No. 1, followed by Southern Arkansas at No. 2. The Central region consists of all teams from the GAC, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

Minnesota State-Mankato ranks No. 3 this week, followed by UAM at No. 4, St. Cloud State at No. 5, Augustana at No. 6, Emporia State at No. 7 and Central Missouri at No. 8. The top six teams from each region are placed into the regional tournament following the conclusion of all conference championship events. The NSIC also earned placed three ranked teams this week with Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State and Augustana. The MIAA represents the final two ranked teams with Emporia State and Central Missouri.

The Boll Weevils are three wins away from tying a school record in wins coming into this weekend’s pivotal GAC series against Southern Arkansas at home. UAM currently sits at 31-12 overall and 20-7 in GAC games. The Weevils need three wins over SAU and three Arkansas Tech losses to win the Great American Conference regular season championship. A single win over SAU this weekend would give UAM a runner-up finish in the league. SAU enters the weekend three games behind UAM at 33-14 overall and 17-10 in GAC games.

UAM and SAU have met once this season in a midweek non-conference tilt March 5 in Magnolia, resulting in a 7-4 win for SAU. The Muleriders won five of six meetings between the two squads last season, including SAU’s 11-2 win in the GAC Tournament championship game.

In terms of national rankings, UAM is ranked in two of the four Division IIpolls and receives votes in another. The Weevils come in at No. 25 in the College Baseball Lineup Top 30, No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 and are receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25. The Muleriders are ranked in three polls and receive votes in the other, coming in at No. 12 in the D2BaseballNews.com and College Baseball Lineup polls and No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. SAU is receiving votes in this week’s NCBWA poll.
