UAM To Honor Top Student-Athletes At Awards Banquet

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s Department of Athletics will honor its top student-athletes at itstv Sports reflection 10db annual awards banquet Monday, April 28.

The banquet, exclusively for UAM student-athletes, coaches, staff members and invited guests, will begin at 7 p.m. inside the Green Room of the Gibson UniversityCenter. The event will be streamed live online at uamsports.com.

UAM will recognize its male and female athletes of the year as well as male and female scholar athletes of the year. A new addition to this year’s event will be the naming of the department’s first Green and White Excellence Award Winner, given to the person that best embodies the qualities of a true student-athlete with athletic participation and involvement with other entities within athletics and the entire university.

Nominees for athlete of the year were selected based on athletic achievements during the 2013-14 seasons. Nominees for scholar athlete of the year were selected from a pool of student-athletes with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 who are currently completing at least their second academic year at UAM and are significant contributors for their respective team. Success in extra-curricular activities, including community service, was also considered during the nomination process for scholar athlete of the year.

2013-14 UAM MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (Stats up to date as of April 22)

BEN AGREDANO – BASEBALL – SENIOR
Leads UAM with a .380 batting average, .538 slugging percentage, 39 runs scored, 65 total hits, 46 runs batted in, two triples, 92 total bases and 194 total plate appearances… One of only two roster members to have played and started in every game so far during the 2014 season… Ranks third in the Great American Conference in batting average and leads the league in hits and RBI… All-GAC Second Team selection for the 2013 season.

JAMIE McGEE – FOOTBALL – FRESHMAN
Became UAM’s most decorated placekicker in his first season with the Boll Weevils… Broke UAM and GAC season record with 17 made field goals during the 2013 season… Became first placekicker in UAM history to be named All-America with a spot on the Beyond Sports Network All-America Third Team and honorable mention for the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America teams… All-GAC First Team, Daktronics All-Region Second Team, Don Hansen Super Region No. 3 Freshman of the Year.

BRANDON WILSON – BASKETBALL – SENIOR
Earned All-GAC First Team honors after his one and only season with the Boll Weevils… Was a three-time GAC Player of the Week, the only player in the league to earn multiple honors… Finished the season ranked fourth in the league with an average of 17.6 points per game with a total of 510 points scored in 29 games… Ranked fifth in the league in rebounding (7.3 per game), sixth in field goal percentage (57.5 percent) and fourth in blocked shots (1.7 per game)… Reached double digits in scoring in all but two games this season… Finished with 11 games of at least 20 points.

2013-14 UAM FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (Stats upto date as of April 22)

JORDAN GOFORTH – BASKETBALL – SOPHOMORE
Led the Cotton Blossoms with an average of 16.9 points per game and a total of 440 points in 26 games this past season… Finished the season ranked sixth in the Great American Conference in scoring, seventh in field goal percentage (48.8 percent), third in free throw percentage (83.2 percent) and sixth in minutes played (33.5 per game)… Was named the GAC Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Year following the 2012-13 season and was nominated for the UAM Female Athlete of the Year Award as well.

BETH JOHNSON – SOFTBALL – SENIOR
Four-year starter for the Cotton Blossoms in centerfield… Has been a part of over 140 wins over the past four seasons… Currently has a .358 batting average in 50 games with 54 hits, 11 doubles, a team-high six triples, six homeruns, 32 runs batted in and a slugging percentage of .629… Ranks in the top 10 of seven different Great American Conference softball statistical categories, including leading the league in triples… GAC Player of the Week once this season… Team Co-Captain… President of UAM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee… Member of UAM’s Alpha Chi Honor Society… Three-time all-conference selection… Selected to a career total of four all-academic teams.

KALI PIHA – SOFTBALL – SOPHOMORE
Two-year starter for the Cotton Blossoms, primarily in left field… Currently has a .363 batting average in 50 games… Leads the team with 13 doubles, nine homeruns, 37 runs batted in… Has a total of 62 hits, a .596 slugging percentage and a .416 on base percentage… Ranks seventh in the GAC in hits, 10th in RBI, fifth in total bases and fifth in plate appearances… Was selected to the 2013 GAC All-Tournament Team.

2013-14 UAM MALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (Stats up to date as of April 22)

TYLER CARUTHERS – BASEBALL – SENIOR
3.41 GPA in Health and Physical Education… Ranks second on the team with a .319 batting average in 30 games played this season… Has 29 hits, five doubles, one homerun and 17 runs batted in… Ranks second on the team in stolen bases… Member of the GAC All-Academic Team… Heavily involved with UAM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

JALEN GARMON – FOOTBALL – JUNIOR
3.34 GPA in History with a Coaching minor… Played in all 11 games this past season… Registered 46 tackles, six tackles for a loss, two quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery… Two-time selection to the GAC All-Academic Team… Has registered over 220 hours of community service over the past year alone, including volunteering for the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home, Special Olympics and the Drew Central reading program… Contributor to the UAM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

ALEX LANG – BASEBALL – SENIOR
3.6 GPA in Health and Physical Education with an Agriculture minor… Two-year starter for the Boll Weevils… Currently has a .302 batting average in 40 games with 38 hits, two doubles and 14 runs batted in… Leads UAM and ranks fourth in the Great American Conference with a .470 on base percentage after having 24 walks and 17 hit by pitches in addition to his hits… Was selected to the 2013 GAC All-Academic Team and was also a recipient of a Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

2013-14 UAM FEMALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (Stats up to date as of April 22)

AMY BAZEMORE – VOLLEYBALL – SENIOR
3.67 GPA in P4 Education… Three-year starter for the Cotton Blossoms… Registered 679 assists this past season for an average of 6.06 assists per set… Leaving UAM ranked third all time in career assists and second in assists per set… Three-time Gulf South Conference/Great American Conference All-Academic Team selection and two-time Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient… Over 30 hours of community service registered with the Special Olympics, Dig Pink fundraiser, Drew Central reading program, among others.

BRITTANY EITEL – SOFTBALL – SENIOR
3.9 GPA in Accounting… Four-year starter for the Cotton Blossoms… This season, has totaled 34 hits, six doubles, one triple, five homeruns and 24 runs batted in…. Has also drawn 19 walks… Two-time all-conference selection… 2011-13 GAC All-Academic Team, 2011-13 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient, 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Award recipient.… Member of UAM’s Alpha Chi Honor Society… Team Co-Captain… Contributor to the UAM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
