UAM Debate Team Wins Awards At Bossier Parrish Tournament

MONTICELLO— Debate students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello placed first in overall winning percentage, took third place in both team overall sweepstakes and team International Public Debate Association (IPDA) sweepstakes, and won numerous individual awards at last week’s Bossier Parrish Community College Eddie Shell Invitational Tournament in Bossier City, La.

   The team of Kelly Reed of Bella Vista, Eddie Weaver of DeWitt, April Smith of Conway, Tanisha Smith of Hamburg, Zack Tucker of Monticello, and Chris Brown of Siloam Springs posted the highest winning percentage during the tournament against competitors from LSU-Shreveport, Union University, the University of Tennessee, Lee College, Louisiana College, Harding, East Texas Baptist, Mississippi College, Henderson State, College of the Mainland’s, and Stephen F. Austin.

   Reed and Weaver reached the quarterfinals of team IPDA debate and Weaver reached the round of 16 in varsity IPDA competition. Wright was the sixth place novice IPDA speaker and reached the round of 16 in novice IPDA debate. Smith also reached the round of 16 in novice IPDA while Tucker was the sixth place professional IPDA speaker.
