Nine-Run Inning Vaults UAM Past No. 15 St. Mary’s

HOUSTON– The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s baseball team scored five runs in the sixth inning and added nine runs in the seventh to tv Sports reflection 10dbcollect a 16-5 run-rule victory over nationally 15th-ranked St. Mary’s University Sunday under the closed roof inside Minute Maid Park.

   In his second at bat of the inning, senior right fielder Tyler Caruthers smashed a three-run homerun into the Crawford Boxes beyond the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a nine-run rally for the Boll Weevils in the inning and end the game due the NCAA’s 10-run mercy rule.

   Caruthers started the frame by drawing a walk and later scored on a bases-clearing triple by senior Ben Agredano later in the inning. Following a St. Mary’s pitching change, Agredano crossed the plate on a wild pitch on the first offering from new Rattler hurler Rick Villa.

   Senior Ray Johnson and junior Austin Braddock both had run-producing hits before Caruthers’ game-ending round-tripper. Caruthers finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.

   UAM (2-0) came back from a two-run deficit with a five-run rally in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Braddock, who finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in.

   St. Mary’s right fielder Brooks Orton broke a 2-all tie in the top sixth with a two-run homerun to right field. The Rattlers (1-1) added one more run in that inning on an RBI single from Joe Hermsen, the fourth and final hit of the rally.

   UAM started the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Braddock to score senior D’Marco Poindexter, who led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Agredano. The Rattlers answered in the top of the second on a sac fly from Mario Maldonado to tie the score at one run each.

   The Weevils regained the lead in the third with an RBI single by Caruthers to score Braddock, who singled to left field to lead off the inning.

   St. Mary’s set up its three-run sixth by tying the score at 2-all in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun down the left field line by Jan Paul Reguero.

   Junior Turner Neely (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Weevils after retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the sixth inning after the Rattlers had already gained the lead. Junior Kregg Snook held the UAM lead with a perfect top of the seventh.

   Matt McClain (0-1) took the loss for St. Mary’s after allowing seven runs off eight hits with seven strikeouts and five walks in the first five innings of the contest.
