NO. 6 Harding Slips Past Blossoms, 73-64

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s women’s basketball team battled with undefeated and nationally sixth-ranked tv Sports reflection 10dbHarding until the end, but it was the Lady Bisons who held on for a 73-64 win over the Cotton Blossoms Saturday inside Steelman Field House.

   The Blossoms (5-9, 1-7 Great American Conference) trimmed a 17-point deficit to a four-point deficit in the final minute of the first half following a 17-4 run over the previous six minutes. The Lady Bisons (17-0, 9-0 GAC) used made jumpers from Montana Lewis and Lauren Harrison in the final 42 seconds to take an eight-point lead of 39-31 into the locker room at halftime.

   UAM started the second half on a 9-1 run in four minutes to force the game’s second tie at 40-all at the 16:11 mark. Harding’s lead stretched to six points at the 11:45 mark before the Blossoms used a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the second half with 10:19 remaining in regulation.

   Harding regained the lead for the final time on an Arielle Saunders jumper at the 7:52 mark. UAM stayed within four points until the final five minutes. The Lady Bisons outscored UAM 15-9 down the stretch to preserve its perfect record.

   The Blossoms finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field  (21-for-60), 31 percent on three-pointers (4-for-13) and 78 percent on foul shots (18-for-23). Harding shot 44 percent from the field (27-for-62), 33 percent on three-pointers (4-for-12) and 75 percent at the line (15-for-20).

   UAM outrebounded Harding 41-38, including an 18-14 edge in offensive boards.

   Sophomore Jordan Goforth led all scorers with 24 points, while adding nine rebounds to her final totals. Goforth has reached double-digits in scoring in all 14 games this season, and has now scored at least 20 points in five games this year. Sophomore Tamia Grady added 11 points. Freshman Poohnu Perry had 10.

   Harding was led by Shana Holmes with 17 points.

   The Blossoms are back in action Tuesday, Jan. 21 on the road against Ouachita Baptist in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for December 7. Tuesday’s tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Bill Vining Arena in Arkadelphia.
