Harding Edges Weevils In Double Overtime

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s men’s basketball suffered just its second home loss of the season in an 89-87 double overtime loss to Harding Saturday inside Steelman Field House.tv Sports reflection 10db

   Harding (9-6, 6-3 Great American Conference) led for the entire first half and all but the last minute of the second half, when UAM (11-5, 4-4 GAC) used alayup from junior Kenric McCants with 42 seconds remaining to put the Weevils up 65-64. Harding made four free throws in the next 30 seconds to take a three-point lead with 15 seconds remaining in regulation.

   Sophomore Ryan Lensing made his third and final three-pointer of the game at the top of the key with seven seconds remaining to tie the game at 68-all. Harding’s buzzer-beater from Weston Jameson did not fall, setting up overtime. It was UAM’s first overtime game of the season, Harding’s third. The Bisons are now 2-1 in overtime games this season.

   In the first overtime, the Bisons jumped out to a five-point lead on a three-pointer from Will Francis and a layup from Hayden Johnson in the first minute of the first extra period. Both teams exchanged baskets and Harding held the lead over the next three minutes until senior Jared Harrison made a pair of free throws with 57 seconds remaining to give the Weevils a 78-77 lead.

   Harding missed its only shot and UAM did not convert on a pair of free throws in the next 50 seconds to set up a pair of free throws from HU’s Hayden Johnson, who made the first and missed the second with seven seconds on theclock to send the game into a second overtime.

   In the second overtime, Harding again jumped out on top, leading by four points at the 3:10 mark on a layup from Will Francis. UAM scored the next five points to take a one-point lead (87-86) on an old-fashioned three-point play from senior Brandon Wilson at the 2:02 mark.

   Harding’s Jacob Gibson nailed a three-pointer on his team’s next possession for the final points of the game. UAM missed a pair of three-pointers in the final 20 seconds to suffer its third consecutive conference loss.

   The Weevils ended the game shooting 44 percent from the field (34-for-77), 26 percent on three-pointers (5-for-19) and 61 percent on foul shots (14-for-23). Harding shot 48 percent from the field (30-for-63), 33 percent on three-pointers (9-for-27) and 69 percent on foul shots (20-for-29).

   Wilson led all scorers and registered his third double-double of the season with 25 points and a new season-high 15 rebounds. The Rayville, La. native made 11-of-19 shots and also had three blocked shots in his 44 minutes.

   Harrison, McCants, Lensing and senior Dayton Mickens all reached double-digits in scoring as well. Harrison had 15, McCants had 12, Lensing had 11 and Mickens had 10.

   Hayden Johnson led the Bisons with 22 points and eight rebounds.

   The Weevils are back in action Tuesday, Jan. 21 on the road against Ouachita Baptist in a makeup game that was originally schedule for Dec. 7. Tuesday’s tip is set for 7:30 p.m. in Arkadelphia.
