MONTICELLO-Big changes are coming to Intramurals. The fitness room and game room opened recently. The fitness room is a spacious room with a flat screen television mounted to the wall and the game console. That’s pretty much all that is in that room for now. The room allows for several people to come in and workout together. The Kinect has games such as Dance Central 2, Deca Sports Freedom, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Training, The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout and Zumba Rush.

The game room has two flat screen televisions mounted to the wall with a PS3 or Xbox. It has some benches to sit on while you play. There is a pool table, air hockey table and foosball table in this room as well. The PS3 has games such as Call of Duty Black Ops II, Heavy Fire, MLB 2K13, NBA 2K13 and NCAA Football 13. The Xbox has Batman Arkhan Assylum, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Halo 2, Madden 13 and NBA 2K13.

The game and fitness rooms are open to all current students, faculty and staff. They are open during normal rec hours, Monday thru Thursday 8 a.m. until 7:45 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday or Sunday 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. The rooms are closed during holidays and home games.

A current ID is needed to check out games and controllers, one ID per controller.  One ID is also needed for balls and stick for pool, puck and striker for air hockey and for each ball in foosball.

Security cameras are in place in the rooms, along with new alarms on the doors. “If someone steals a game, it will not be replaced,” said Julie Gentry, director of Intramurals and Recreation. The student’s ID will not be returned until the game, controller and remote or anything else checked out by the student has been returned.

Each game console has a one-hour time limit, if other students are waiting. So far this week, around 50 students have made use of these new rooms. The rooms are meant to be a social setting; somewhere students can hang out and have something to do between classes.

The fitness and game rooms will not add any additional fees to the student bills. These rooms were left empty after the wellness center relocated. Surveys were conducted to see what students wanted to see on campus. These surveys were conducted on incoming freshmen, at the organization fair and at the ID desk.

Intramurals now offer Weevil Wheels of Wellness. This is a program that has four bicycles available for checkout by leaving your ID at the ID desk. There are two men’s bikes, one woman’s bike and one tandem bike. These are available during the same open rec times as the game room and fitness room.
