tv_News 10dbMONTICELLO — Richard Harris and Ryan Crowley of Monticello, both students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, placed eighth at the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Bass Tournament held last weekend at Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Ark.

Harris, a freshman forestry major, and Crowley, a senior marketing major, combined to catch four bass weighing four pounds, 13 ounces. By finishing eighth, Harris and Crowley qualified for one of five two-day FLW College Fishing Conference Invitational Tournaments. The FLW College Southern Conference Invitational is scheduled for Oct. 5-6 at Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Jasper, Tex.

Three regular season qualifying events are held in each conference – Central, Northern, Southern, Texas, and Western. The top 15 teams from each qualifying tournament advance to the two-day invitational tournaments, where the first place teams win $4,000 for their school’s bass fishing club. The top 10 teams from each conference invitational advance to the 2014 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

Harris and Crowley got off to a slow start, fishing top water with no luck. Their luck changed when they began fishing shallow brush piles, grass and flipping docks with a bitters Fluke and Strike King Rodent.  After noticing a large group of schooling shad, Harris landed the first fish. Crowley followed with three more fishing around nearby docks. “We mainly had two goals for this weekend,” said Harris. “Weigh in a fish since it was only my second tournament to ever fish in, and to place in the top 15 so we could qualify for the invitational at Sam Rayburn.”

College fishing is free to enter. All participants must be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their institution.
