ATU Sweeps Past UAM In GAC Opener

tv Sports reflection 10dbRUSSELLVILLE – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team opened Great American Conference play with a three-set loss to Arkansas Tech on Tuesday night inside Tucker Coliseum. Final game scores were 28-26, 25-18 and 25-14.

   After UAM led 22-18 in the first set, the Golden Suns (6-3, 1-0 GAC) rallied for five straight points to take the lead. UAM responded point-for-point from then on until a pair of attack errors allowed ATU to take a 1-0 advantage. The Blossoms (4-6, 0-1 GAC) had 14 kills and nine errors on 49 attempts in the first set for a .102 percentage. ATU answered with 16 kills and seven errors on 49 attempts for a .184 percentage.

   ATU was able to stay ahead of UAM in the final two sets due to UAM’s poor hitting. The Blossoms hit right at zero in the second set with seven kills and seven errors, while going in the negative in the match-deciding frame with just three kills to seven errors.

   Senior Tori Bozzo led UAM with seven kills on 34 attempts with five errors,while junior Christina Rini added five kills and four block assists. They were aided mostly from senior Amy Bazemore, who collected a team-high 17 assists.

   Junior Jessica Cuba and senior Tusalava Kuaea paced the UAM defense with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

   The Blossoms are back in action this Saturday, Sept. 21 in Jackson, Tenn. for a tri-match against Union University and Victory University.
