UAM Volleyball Picked 9th In GAC Coaches Poll

tv Sports reflection 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team has been predicted to finish ninth in the 2013 Great American Conference coaches poll that was released on Thursday, Aug. 16.

   Harding was selected to defend its 2012 regular season and tournament championships with seven of the 11 first place votes for a total of 97 pollpoints. Arkansas Tech followed with 93 points and the other four first place votes.

   Southwestern Oklahoma State was picked third with 78 points, Southern Nazarene followed in fourth at 69 points, Southern Arkansas was picked fifth at 65 points, East Central was picked sixth at 56 points, Ouachita Baptist was picked seventh at 49 points and Southeastern Oklahoma State was picked eighth at 35 points.

   The Blossoms earned 31 poll points for ninth, followed by Henderson State and Northwestern Oklahoma, both tying for last with 16 points each.

   UAM finished seventh in the GAC standings last year with an overall record of 11-24 and a 4-10 mark in GAC matches. Led by second-year head coach Peter Cruz, the Blossoms return four starters and seven letter winners from last year, and welcome 12 newcomers to the program for the 2013 campaign.

   The preseason coaches poll was voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team.

   The Blossoms open the 2013 season on the weekend of Sept. 6-7 with a trip to Pensacola, Fla. to compete in the West Florida Invitational Tournament.
