tv_News 10dbMONTICELLO — Two 2013 high school graduates have been selected to receive Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) scholarships to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello next fall.

The recipients are Tiffany Jernigan, a graduate of Hampton High School and the daughter of Robert and Angela Williams; and LaTasha Shopher, a graduate of McGehee High School and the daughter of Aundi and David Shopher. Both Jernigan and Shopher plan to major in nursing.

The EAST scholarships are presented to qualified high school seniors who have participated in the EAST educational technology initiative for at least two years while in high school. The scholarship covers tuition for 15 semester hours of course credit, excluding summer terms, and is renewable by maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on 12 semester hours and providing 10 hours per week of voluntary assistance in UAM’s Office of Information Technology or Spatial Analysis Laboratory.

Scholarship applicants must have a composite score of 19 on the ACT as well as scores of 19 in both math and English, a minimum high school grade point average of 3.0 or better and two letters of reference regarding EAST service and performance.

The EAST program is offered through a number of school systems in Arkansas and nationwide. EAST students perform service learning projects, identify needs in their communities and work to provide innovative solutions for those needs.

“The university is pleased to honor and recognize the outstanding students who are part of the EAST initiative and feel the best way to do this is by making scholarships available for these students,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Providing scholarships as well as opportunities for hands-on experience in areas such as information technology and spatial information systems seems like an ideal match.”

Applications for the scholarship are available in high school counseling offices or in the office of admissions. For more information, contact the office of admissions at (800) 844-1826.
