tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — University of Arkansas at Monticello Volleyball Coach Peter Cruz has announced the signing of six additional student-athletes to join the squad starting in the 2013 season.

This group of five transfers and one high school senior supplements the four signees Cruz announced in December of 2012. Read more about those signees here:

“I am very proud of the class we have assembled,” said Cruz. “We covered all of our need areas and I believe that we have brought up the overall talent level of the program. Along with our fall class, we have a good mixture of transfers and freshmen which will help us in both the short term and long term future. Our seven returners had a productive spring and everyone understands that competition for playing time will be intense this coming season. Competition will be a main focus this season in order to continue the progress this program has been making over the past couple of years.”

Jessica Cuba, a 5-10 outside hitter from Georgetown, Texas, joins the team as a transfer from Temple College in Texas. “Jessica is a 6-rotation outside who was the go-to hitter on her junior college team which qualified for the NJCAA national tournament both of her seasons,” said Cruz. “I believe she will be ready to step in and be a leader on the floor, both offensively and defensively.”

Cruz signed a pair of junior college middle hitters. Tasha Evans, a 6-0 middle hitter from Almont, Mich., joins the team from Macomb Community College in Michigan and Gabriela Jandotti, a 6-0 middle hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, joins the team from Northeastern Junior College in Colorado.

“Tasha and Gabi both come from strong junior college programs and will add much needed depth to our middle hitter position,” said Cruz. “They will both compete for playing time right away. Gabi is only the second international player we’ve had at UAM which is exciting as well.”

Kayla Macadlo, a 5-7 outside hitter from Munster, Ind., joins the team from Vincennes University in Indiana. “Kayla is another tough, 6-rotation outside with a strong jump serve,” said Cruz. “She could see time at both outside hitter and defensive specialist for us this season.”

Frankie Zaragoza, a 5-8 defensive specialist from Stockton, Calif., joins the team from San Joaquin Delta College in California. “Frankie is a disciplined passer who also hit at her junior college which is exactly the type of versatility that I look for in players,” said Cruz. “She will help offset the loss of our three best passers from last season.”

Kedra Johnson, a 5-7 outside hitter from North Little Rock, Ark., concludes the spring signing class and will be the fifth true freshman on the roster for the 2013 season. She prepped at North Little Rock High School. “Kedra is a tremendous athlete who I believe will be a major contributor at UAM over the next couple of years,” said Cruz. “This spring she played club volleyball with Olivia Iriana, one of our fall signees, and impressed me with her net play. With some work, her passing will improve and she can develop into a force for us on the outside.”
