Awards Banquet To Honor Top Student-Athletes

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s Department of Athletics will host its first-ever awards banquet Tuesday, April 16 at the University Center to honor the 2012-13 male and female athletes of the year, as well as the 2012-13 male and female scholar-athletes of the year.

   The banquet, exclusively for UAM student-athletes, coaches, staff members and special guests, will begin at 7 p.m. inside the Green Room of the University Center. The event will be streamed live on the web at uamsports.com.

   The four awards to be presented at the banquet were voted on and selected by the UAM Athletics Awards Committee. Nominees for the scholar athlete of the year awards were required to have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and be in their second year of competition at UAM, as well as be a significant contributor for their respective team during the 2012-13 seasons. Nominees for the athlete of the year awards were selected based on athletic achievements only during the 2012-13 seasons.

   The awards will be presented in the following order: Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year.

   FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (All stats updated through April 15, 2013)

   BRITTANY EITEL – SOFTBALL – JUNIOR
3.93 GPA in Accounting (Math Minor), Fall 2012 Alpha Chi Honor Society, .292 batting average, Top fielding percentage among starters (265 chances: 227 putouts, 35 assists, 3 errors, .989 percentage), 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team, 2011-12 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient, 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Award recipient

   BETH JOHNSON – SOFTBALL – JUNIOR
3.88 GPA in Exercise Science, Fall 2012 Alpha Chi Honor Society Inductee, President of UAM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, .336 batting average, .579 slugging percentage, leads the team with eight homeruns and 30 runs batted in, played and started in all 46 games… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team, 2011-12 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient, 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Award recipient.
 
   CANDACE VIRGADAMO – BASKETBALL – SENIOR
4.0 GPA in Accounting, Fall 2012 Alpha Chi Honor Society Inductee, 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District Team, 7.3 points per game, led the team with 51 assists and an average of 29.7 minutes played per game… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team, 2011-12 D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient.

   MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (All stats updated through April 15, 2013)

   T.J. COX – BASEBALL – SENIOR
3.36 GPA in Heath and Physical Education (History Minor), .295 batting average, .525 slugging percentage, .403 on base percentage, six doubles, one triple, two homeruns, 15 runs batted in… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team.

   TAYLOR EAVES – BASEBALL – SENIOR
3.41 GPA in Exercise Science, Ranks second on the team with a .340 batting average with 50 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, three homeruns, 28 runs batted in, .510 slugging percentage, .441 on-base percentage, nine stolen bases, GAC Player of the Week (4-2-13)… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team.

   SETH OXNER – FOOTBALL – GRADUATE
Obtained Master’s Degree in Physical Education in December 2012 with a 3.5 GPA, Started on the offensive line in all 11 games this past season… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team.

   MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (All stats updated through April 15, 2013)

   TAYLOR EAVES – BASEBALL – SENIOR
Ranks second on the team with a .340 batting average with 50 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, three homeruns, 28 runs batted in, .510 slugging percentage, .441 on-base percentage, nine stolen bases, GAC Player of the Week (4-2-13)… 2011-12 GAC All-Academic Team.… Ranks 12th in the GAC in batting average, eighth in hits, seventh in runs scored, seventh in doubles and eighth in total bases.

   KORI FORGE – BASKETBALL – SENIOR
2012-13 Great American Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-GAC, First Team Daktronics All-Region, Division II Bulletin All-America Honorable Mention, Three-time GAC Player of the Week, Led the GAC in scoring (531 points, 19.7 points per game)… Ranked 27th in NCAA Division II in scoring, fourth in the Central region… Reached double-digits in 26 of 27 games, scored 20 points 13 times and scored 30 points three times… Became the 25th member of UAM’s 1,000-point club and the first in the Great American Conference.

   JAMAL NIXON – FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL – JUNIOR
2012 All-Great American Conference Honorable Mention, Little Rock Touchdown Club Team MVP… 59 receptions for 771 yards with five touchdowns… Ranked second in the GAC in yards per game and third in receptions per game, 212 yards against Arkansas Tech (ranks second all-time in GAC)… Also set a new UAM record for a junior in that game with 14 receptions… Also played in 25 games for the UAM basketball team this season, averaging 6.4 points per game and finished the season ranked first in the league in steals per game (2.1 average, 52 total).

   FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINEES (All stats updated through April 15, 2013)

   JORDAN GOFORTH – BASKETBALL – FRESHMAN
2012-13 Great American Conference Freshman of the Year, Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team… Led the team in minutes played (693)… Shot 46 percent from the field (129-of-279), 34 percent on three-pointers (27-of-80) and 78 percent on free throws (60-of-77)… Reached double-digits in scoring in 19 of 27 games, scored 20 points four times… Ranked 16th in the GAC in scoring, seventh in field goal percentage, 11th in free throw percentage and 12th in three-point percentage.

   AMY KLEYPAS – VOLLEYBALL – SENIOR
2012 All-Great American Conference Second Team… Totaled 404 kills for an average of 3.21 kills per set in 35 matches played… Also tallied 394 digs for an average of 3.13 per set… Also had 20 service aces and 47 total blocks… Was responsible for 454 points this season for an average of 3.6 points per set… Ranked fourth in the GAC in kills and fifth in total points… Ranks fourth in the UAM career record book for total kills (684) and fifth in kills per set (3.18).

   MAGGIE SANDS – SOFTBALL – SENIOR
Currently ranks seventh in the Great American Conference with a batting average of .389… Started the 2013 season with a streak of 33 consecutive games to reach base… Also has had a team-high 10-game hitting streak this season… Has totaled 56 hits with eight doubles, one triple and 21 runs batted in… Leads the team and ranks sixth in the GAC with an on base percentage of .485 after totaling a 25 walks, which ranks second in the GAC… Ranks third in the league in total plate appearances.
