Slaughter Tosses One-Hitter In Sweep Of SAU

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team finalized a four-game Great American Conference series sweep over Southern Arkansas on Sunday with a 6-2 win in the first game followed by a 1-0 win in the second game on a one-hit shutout performance from sophomore Katie Slaughter.

   Slaughter (13-7) allowed a walk in the first and a single in the sixth for SAU’s only base runners of the game. She finished the game with four strikeouts.

   The Cotton Blossoms (26-20, 12-10 GAC) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from senior Maggie Sands to score freshman Cassidy Wilson, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

   Taylor Clifton (5-12) took the loss for SAU after allowing one run on just two hits in the first three innings. Hanna Gill, who took the loss in the first game, kept UAM scoreless on just two hits in the final three innings.

   In the second game, SAU (23-24, 15-15 GAC) scored a run in each of the first two innings, both of them unearned due to UAM errors.

   Junior Brittany Eitel tied the game at 2 with two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth, before the Blossoms rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to finalize the scoring. UAM runs in the fifth came on an RBI single from Sands, an RBI single from junior Beth Johnson, a sac fly from sophomore Sara Matthews and an RBI single from Eitel.

   Senior Randa Perry (10-11) earned the complete-game victory after allowing two unearned runs off four hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Gill (17-10) took the loss, allowing six runs off eight hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

   The Cotton Blossoms travel to Conway, Ark. this Wednesday, April 17 for a non-conference matchup against Central Arkansas. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
