tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened its weekend series with a 5-2 win over Southern Nazarene today, April 13 at home before falling 2-1 in the second half of the double header.

In the 5-2 win, UAM scored one in the first, one in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth off seven hits, led by junior D’Marco Poindexter’s 2-for-2 performance at the bottom of the lineup.

UAM (27-15, 15-11 GAC) got on the board on an RBI single from senior Danny Loya in the first, made it a 2-0 game in the fifth on a sac fly from senior Taylor Eaves to drive in Poindexter, who doubled to lead off the inning.

SNU (16-21, 8-18 GAC) tied the game at 2 in the top of the sixth on a solo homerun from Ryan Brosnan and a sac fly from Kyle Fultz later in the inning. UAM regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two runs, taking advantage of an SNU error and a sac fly from Loya.

UAM added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on RBI sacrifice bunt from junior Alex Lang to score junior Chad Miller, who reached base on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on a passed ball.

Senior Brent Noble (5-2) earned the win in relief after keeping SNU scoreless off just one hit with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Senior Eddie Smith picked up his third save of the season after coming in with two runners on base and the tying run at bat and allowing just one hit in the final two thirds of the ninth inning. Tim Coleman (2-6) took the loss for SNU after allowing three runs off five hits with two strikeouts in the first six innings.

In the second game, SNU rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh and a complete game effort from its starter, Matt Berry, to force a rubber game tomorrow. The Boll Weevils got on the board in the third on a sac fly from Eaves to scored Miller, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Crimson Storm posted back-to-back run-producing at bats in the top of the seventh to score the go ahead run. Luis Hernandez had an RBI single, followed by a sac fly from Fultz.

UAM starter Logan Johnson allowed just one unearned run off four hits with four strikeouts in the first six innings. Sophomore Jeff Harvill (3-2) took the loss after allowing the go ahead run to reach base on a single. SNU’s Matt Berry (3-8) got the win after allowing just one run off five hits with one strikeout in the full seven innings.

The two squads will play the series-deciding game on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon at Weevils Field.
