tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened its three-game Great American Conference series this weekend at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State with a pair of victories on Saturday, winning the first game 9-6 and taking the second game 3-2 in extra innings.

The Boll Weevils (24-14, 13-10 GAC) used a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning of the first game to record the win. Senior Hunter Allday delivered the big hit in that inning with a three-run double off the wall in right-center field. Sophomore Bronson Gillam delivered the game-tying hit with a pinch-hit, RBI single down the right field line earlier in the inning.

UAM opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Southeastern error and an RBI groundout from junior Chad Miller.

The Savage Storms responded with one run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead.

UAM answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 5-all following an RBI double from junior Stephen Martinez and a two-run double from junior D’Marco Poindexter.

Southeastern took its final lead in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of UAM errors to push one run across.

Senior Eddie Smith (4-3) earned the win after allowing just one run, which was unearned, off just one hit with one strikeout and one walk in the final 3.2 innings. Cameron Mann (3-1) suffered the loss to Southeastern after allowing four runs off five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in the final 2.2 innings.

Aside from a walk-off double from senior T.J. Cox in the bottom of the eighth inning of a schedule seven inning game, the nightcap featured a pitching duel with Southeastern’s Vance Woodruff and UAM’s Logan Johnson.

Woodruff (2-7) went the distance and suffered the loss, allowing three runs off five hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks in just over seven innings of work. Those walks played a key role in UAM’s run-production with a bases-loaded walk from junior Alex Lang, which was followed by a bases-loaded hit by pitch from senior Taylor Eaves to give the Weevils their only runs of regulation.

Southeastern opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single from Trevor Bowen, and UAM’s Logan Johnson kept them off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth, when the Savage Storm scratched one run across on an fielder’s choice by Aaron Chalk on a diving stop from Eaves at third bases to save more runs from scoring.

Junior Ben Agredano led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt from senior Danny Loya to set up Cox’s double of the left field wall that scored Loya to end the game.

Johnson settled for a no decision after allowing two runs off eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the first 6.2 innings of the game. He was relieved by sophomore Jeff Harvill (3-1), who was credited with the win after keeping Southeastern scoreless on just one hit in the final 1.1 innings.

The Boll Weevils and Savage Storm close out the series on Sunday with a single, nine-inning game set for 1 p.m. at Weevils Field.
