tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team used a two-run homerun from senior T.J. Cox in the bottom of the eighth and three hits and a passed ball in the ninth to record a 10-9 non-conference victory over Great American Conference foe Harding at home on Tuesday.

Both teams hit through their respective lineups in the first inning. Harding (18-13) scored three runs off three hits and two errors, while UAM (22-14) answered with five runs off five hits, highlighted by a three-run triple from junior catcher Chad Miller. Senior Hunter Allday recorded an RBI double earlier in the inning, which was followed by an RBI groundout from junior Ray Johnson.

UAM scored a run in each of the next two innings to take a 7-3 lead on a solo homerun from senior Taylor Eaves in the second and an RBI single from Cox in the third.

The Bisons took advantage of seven walks and one hit by pitch to score five runs off no hits in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead. HU extended that lead in the seventh on an RBI single from Matt Calhoun.

Cox’s homerun in the eighth, his second round-tripper of the season, cleared the UAM version of the “Green Monster” in right field after senior Danny Loya led off the inning with a single to center field.

After holding the Bisons scoreless in the top of the ninth, UAM led off the bottom half of the inning with three straight singles from Eaves, Allday and Johnson. Eaves scored during junior Bronson Gillam’s following at bat on a passed ball to give UAM the win.

Sophomore Jeff Harvill (2-1) earned the win after keeping HU off the board on just one hit in the final two innings. HU’s Bronson Smith (1-2) took the loss after allowing three hits and one unearned run off the passed ball without recording an out in the ninth.

Eaves and Loya each went 3-for-4 at the plate, followed by two hits each for Allday and Cox.

The Boll Weevils are set to travel to Cleveland, Miss. on Wednesday for a matchup against the nation’s top-ranked Delta State Statesmen. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. DSU defeated UAM 9-5 earlier this season in Monticello.
