Magicians Turn Weevils Into Winners

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — Senior Danny Loya combined in both games for five hits and four runs batted in to lead the University of Arkansas- Monticello’s baseball team to a double header sweep over LeMoyne-Owen College Tuesday at home by final scores of 11-4 and 8-3.

   Loya went 2-for-4 in the first game with one RBI, but saved his better performance for the second half of the double header, going 3-for-4, including two doubles, with three RBI to propel UAM to its 19th victory of the season.

   In the first game, the Boll Weevils (19-13) jumped out to a quick lead with five runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from senior T.J. Cox, who was immediately drive in on an RBI double from junior Chad Miller in the next at bat.

   UAM added to its lead in the fourth inning with two runs off a sac fly from junior Ben Agredano and an RBI single from Loya.

   LeMoyne-Owen (10-9 reached the scoreboard in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun from Brandon Small. UAM answered in the bottom half of the inning to take a 8-1 lead on an RBI single from senior Hunter Allday.

   LOC added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run double from Jorrel Johnson before UAM pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by an RBI triple from Miller and an RBI single from junior D’Marco Poindexter.

   The Magicians finalized the scoring with one unearned run in the top of the seventh on a passed ball.

   Freshman Zach McKnight (4-1) earned the win after allowing no runs off just three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in the first four innings. Darryl Dunbar took the loss for LOC after allowing five runs off just two hits with three walks in the first two-thirds of the first inning.

   LOC started the scoring in the first game, taking advantage of two UAM fielding errors to take a 1-0 lead. That was all the Magicians could manage against UAM starter Kade Garlington, who allowed no earned runs off just one hit with five strikeouts in the first five innings. Garlington (1-0) earned his first career win after UAM rallied for three runs run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead.

   In the three-run fourth, Loya started the rally with an RBI double, followed later in the frame by an RBI single from junior Johnny Wolf and an RBI groundout from junior Alex Lang. UAM took a 4-1 lead in the fifth when sophomore Bronson Gillam scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk earlier in the inning.

   LOC scored its final two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Brandon Small and an RBI fielder’s choice from Josh Wyant.

   UAM finalized the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, highlighted by a two-run double by Loya and an RBI triple from Cox.

   Senior reliever Brent Noble earned his first save of the season after entering the game in the sixth inning with the tying run base and allowing no runs and no hits throughout the remainder of the contest.

   Ian Gary took the loss for LOC after allowing four runs off five hits in the first 4.1 innings.

   The Boll Weevils are back to Great American Conference action this weekend on the road against East Central for a three-game series starting with a single, nine-inning game this Friday, March 29. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Ada, Okla.
