Weevils Squashed By Bulldogs In Overtime

tv_sports 10dbBARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State scored 20 points in overtime to defeat the University of Arkansas-Monticello’s men’s basketball team 77-69 on Friday in the opening round of the 2013 Great American Conference Championship Tournament. The overtime loss follows the UAM women’s team’s overtime loss to Arkansas Tech on Thursday in the GAC Tournament.

   The Bulldogs shot only missed one shot from the field in the extra five minutes and added 10 points on 13 free throw attempts. UAM was limited to just 12 points in overtime and shot 38 percent from the field. The Boll Weevils did not make it to the free throw line once in the extra period.

   At the end of regulation, UAM junior Brandon Sims made two free throws with 1:05 remaining to erase a seven-point deficit and force a 57-all tie. After a missed layup from SWOSU’s Rod Camphor on the other end, UAM’s Kori Forge was guilty of a traveling violation to set up the Bulldogs with the final shot. Ryan Donahoe’s layup at the buzzer missed to force UAM’s third overtime game of the season.

   With the exception of a pair of free throws from Sims in the opening minute of the second half to give UAM a 31-30 lead, the Bulldogs lead for the entire second half. The Bulldogs held a six-point lead at the 15:16 mark and grew their lead to as much as seven points with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation. Each time, UAM fought back to within one point, but was never able to force a tie until Sims’ free throws at the 1:05 mark.

   UAM controlled most of the first half, leading by as much as five points on two different occasions, including a 5-0 lead after the first minute of play. Forge nailed his second three-pointer of the game at the 6:45 mark of the first half to give his team its other five-point lead in the first 20 minutes. SWOSU posted a 6-1 scoring run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a one-point lead of 29-28 into the locker room at the break.

   For the game, UAM shot 36 percent from the field (24-of-67), 29 percent on three-pointers (7-of-24) and 56 percent on foul shots (14-of-25). SWOSU shot 47 percent from the field (24-of-51), 44 percent on three-pointers (4-of-9) and 66 percent on foul shots (25-of-38).

   Senior Kori Forge led UAM with 16 points in his final collegiate game. Junior Brandon Sims added 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Junior Dayton Mickens and junior Ramon Mejia also reached double-digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

   SWOSU’s Rod Camphor broke a GAC Tournament record and tied the overall GAC single-game record with 36 points on a 12-for-14 shooting performance. Michael Bradley and Ryan Donahoe added 17 and 12 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

   UAM ends its season with a 16-11 overall record.
