Weevils Defeat Tigers

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello’s baseball team used a six-run first inning to defeat Ouachita Baptist 7-3 at home on Friday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series.

   OBU (9-10-1) started the scoring with a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout from Keegan Ghidotti.

   In the six-run first inning, the Boll Weevils (12-8, 6-4 GAC) totaled three hits, but scored most of their runs on six walks, three coming with the bases loaded. Sophomore Bronson Gillam, senior Taylor Eaves and junior Alex Lang all had bases loaded walks to go along with RBI singles from junior Stephen Martinez senior T.J. Cox.

   UAM scored its final run in the bottom of the second, increasing its lead to 7-1 on an RBI groundout from Cox.

   OBU finalized its scoring with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Will Wallace and one run in the sixth on an RBI groundout from McCrae Jones.

   Senior Bobby Bryan (3-2) earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and two walks in the first 6.1 innings. OBU’s Austin Watson (1-3) took the loss after a rough start, allowing seven runs off three hits with six walks and one hit batter in just one inning.
