OBU Downs UAM With Second-Half Surge

tv_sports 10dbARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist outscored the University of Arkansas-Monticello’s men’s basketball team 47-21 in the second half to defeat the Boll Weevils 62-58 on Saturday in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

   The Boll Weevils (16-10, 11-9 GAC) led 31-21 at halftime and grew that lead to 12 points on the opening possession of the second half, but OBU responded with a 21-3 scoring run over the next eight minutes to take a six-point lead with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

   The Tigers (14-12, 10-9 GAC) stretched their lead to six points once again three minutes later on a three-pointer from Austin Mitchell. OBU held its lead until the final five minutes, when UAM made its final surge, using a 9-2 scoring run capped by a pair of free throws from junior Brandon Sims to give UAM a one-point lead at the 4:51 mark.

   Both teams exchanged a basket in the next two possessions to give UAM a one-point lead with 3:29 remaining. OBU then scored five straight points to take a four-point lead with 45 seconds remaining, before UAM finalized its scoring with a pair of free-throws from Sims with 23 seconds left. OBU made two more free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win, its second victory over UAM this season.

   The Boll Weevils were limited to just six made field goals in the final 20 minutes, scoring the majority of their points from the free-throw line, where the team was 15-of-18 in the second half.

   UAM earned its 10-point lead at halftime following a 12-1 scoring run in the last six minutes of the opening period. Prior to that, the largest lead of the game was five points, obtained by both teams. OBU led by five at the 12:40 mark following a 6-0 run, later answered by a three-pointer from Sims and a jumper from Forge on back-to-back possessions with 9:41 remaining to give UAM a 16-11 advantage.

   For the game, UAM shot 33 percent from the field (18-of-54), 31 percent on three-pointers (4-of-13) and 82 percent on foul shots (18-of-22). OBU shot 39 percent from the field (21-of-54), 33 percent on three-pointers (4-of-12) and 62 percent on foul shots (16-of-26).

   Sims led UAM with 15 points off the bench. Forge and junior Josh Gibson also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Michael Morris led OBU with 13 points.

   The Boll Weevils enter the Great American Conference Championship Tournament as the No. 3 seed for the second straight season, and will open the event against sixth-seeded Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday, March 8 at noon at the Bruin Field House in Bartlesville, Okla.
