tv_sports 10dbARKADELPHIA – Down 5-0 in after five full innings, UAM (10-6, 5-2 GAC) finally reached the scoreboard on a three-run homerun from junior Ray Johnson in the top of the sixth to pull the Weevils to within one run.

Then, after holding HSU scoreless in the bottom of the inning, the Boll Weevils exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to finalize the scoring, highlighted by back-to-back run-producing at bats – a two-run bases-loaded double from junior Ben Agredano followed by a two-run single from Johnson. Junior Chad Miller got in on the production two batters later with an RBI groundout.

Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and tallied his first career five-RBI performance. It is the only five-RBI game from a Boll Weevil this season.

The Reddies (10-4, 5-2 GAC) got on the board first with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Carlos Rodriguez followed by a two-runs single from Michael Schell. HSU took a 5-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI single from Ben Wainwright.

Senior Eddie Smith (3-1) earned the win in relief, holding HSU scoreless on just one hit with four strikeouts and no walks in the final four innings. HSU’s Ethan Jones (0-3) took the loss after allowing three runs with two walks without retiring a batter in the seventh.

In addition to Johnson’s multi-hit performance, Agredano and junior Stephen Martinez each posted a 2-for-5 outing at the plate.

The Weevils and the Reddies conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a double-header starting at noon at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.
