tv_News 10dbMONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas-Monticello Student Government Association discussed Weevil Perks and upcoming events at its meeting Feb. 26.

SGA plans to launch Weevil Perks in fall 2013. Weevil Perks will provide students with a list of businesses that offer student discounts to UAM students. Weevil Perks will be distributed on the Athletic Association’s website at student orientation and during registration periods on campus.

“I think Weevil Perks is a great idea for UAM and local businesses to work together where both parties can benefit,” Samantha Montgomery, SGA president, said.

Students at the meeting also discussed the possibility of hosting a debate with candidates for governor of Arkansas. All current candidates for the position will be invited to a debate held on campus.

SGA members agreed to pursuing the idea and will proceed with plans upon receiving approval from Chancellor Jack Lassiter.

“I think it’s a great idea.  I like the fact that they’re willing to come and see us. A lot of the times they don’t think about younger people’s votes,” Lei Brist, Student Activities Board president, said.

Students also created new events to occur on campus. On March 5, the SGA plans to host a “Crash Party.” The purpose of the event seeks to raise student awareness of the new Wi-Fi system on campus, as well as test the system for on-campus events that will occur during Spring Break.

SGA also discussed several fund-raising options to be enacted soon due to low funds. SGA will hold Root Beer Pong and a Hot Dog Eating Contest March 7 at 8 p.m. in the University Center Green Room. Students who wish to enter Root Beer Pong can pay an entry fee of $3 per individual, or $5 for a team of two. Students wishing to enter the Hot Dog Eating Contest will pay $5 per entry.

Other fundraiser events discussed included a Mr. UAM Pageant and a Dance ‘Til You Drop competition.

Elections to choose SGA representatives for next year will happen this semester. Students can expect to receive an email regarding the elections soon.
