No.1 Statesman Get Past Weevils, 9-5

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — Senior Taylor Eaves went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in, leading the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team in a 9-5 loss to No. 1 Delta State on Tuesday at home.

   Eaves picked up his first four-hit game of the year in the loss, notching a double in the first inning, an RBI double in the fifth, a single in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth. Juniors Stephen Martinez and D’Marco Poindexter also recorded multi-hit games. Martinez with 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Poindexter went 2-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt added to his totals.

   The Statesmen (11-0) jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning, scoring two runs off two hits and also taking advantage of a walk and a hit batter.

   UAM (9-6) answered in the bottom of the first with one run on an RBI groundout to score Eaves, who doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Alex Lang.

   The Statesmen took a 3-1 lead in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly out from Ben Kingsley to score Tyler Aldridge, who doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third base on a passed ball. DSU added another run in the fifth on another sac fly from Kingsley.

   UAM made it a 4-3 lead game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, highlighted by Eaves’ RBI double. DSU committed two errors in that inning, and ended the game with six defensive miscues.

   DSU scored five runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. Two of those runs were a result of a UAM throwing error.

   UAM answered in the bottom half of the sixth with an unearned run due to a fielding error by the DSU left fielder. The Boll Weevils finalized the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Eaves to score Martinez, who singled to lead off the inning.

   Freshman Zach McKnight (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs off five hits with one strikeout and two walks in the first five innings. Drew Milligan (1-0) earned the win for DSU in relief, allowing one run off one hit with one strikeout and one walk in 1.1 innings of work.

   The Boll Weevils are back in action this weekend with a three-game Great American Conference series on the road against Henderson State.
