Weevils Split With SWOSU, Bulldogs Take Series 2-1

tv_sports 10dbWEATHERFORD, Okla. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team posted a 8-6, 12-inning victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday before losing 4-3 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 series win.

   The Boll Weevils dropped the first game of the series with an 8-3 loss on Saturday.

   UAM (9-5, 4-2 GAC) scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning of the first game, using an RBI single from senior Hunter Allday and a fielding error from the SWOSU shortstop to earn the victory.

   Prior to that inning, neither team scored since the sixth inning, when UAM plated three runs on an RBI double from Allday, an RBI single from junior Stephen Martinez and an RBI groundout from junior Chad Miller to take a 6-5 lead. SWOSU answered with one run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single from Chris Faulkner for the final run of the game before UAM’s game-winning rally in the 12th.

   Miller led UAM at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two RBI. Junior Alex Lang, junior Ben Agredano, Allday and junior Ray Johnson all had two hits in the win.

   Senior Eddie Smith (2-1) earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks in the final 2.1 innings. Jonathan Johnson (0-2) took the loss for SWOSU, allowing two runs off two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in the final three innings.

   In the series finale, SWOSU scored three unanswered runs in the final three innings, including a game-ending RBI single from Kale Thaxton in the seventh to secure the series win for the Bulldogs (7-6, 2-4 GAC).

   UAM led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning after scoring on an RBI single from Agredano and an RBI sac fly from Johnson in the top of the first, and an RBI single from Miller in the fifth.

   SWOSU got on the board in the third on an RBI single from Cooper Chambers, and tied the game with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Thaxton and a UAM fielding error.

   Agredano and Miller tied for the team-high with two hits each in the loss.

   Senior Brent Noble (3-1) took the loss in relief after allowing the winning run in the seventh. Junior starter Chris Guzman threw six quality innings, allowing three runs off seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.  SWOSU’s Kevin Kelly (1-0) earned the win after holding UAM scoreless on just one hit in the final two innings.

   The Boll Weevils return to action this Tuesday, Feb. 26 at home against the nation’s top-ranked Delta State Statesmen. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Weevils Field.
