MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team opened Great American Conference play on Saturday with 2-1 and 2-0 victories over Southern Nazarene at home.

The Cotton Blossoms (12-6, 2-0 GAC) opened the series using a bases-loaded hit by pitch from junior Beth Johnson in the bottom of the seventh inning to score junior Hannah Pendley from third base to get the 2-1 win.

The Crimson Storm (6-6, 0-2 GAC) tied the game in the top of the seventh on a leadoff home run from Kacey Acker.

UAM opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Kali Piha to score junior Summer Huddleston, who singled to lead off the inning.

Senior Randa Perry (5-4) recorded the win after allowing just one run off five hits with six strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game effort. SNU’s Maci Brooke-Lambert (4-3) suffered the loss in complete-game style, allowing two runs off seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

In the second half of the double-header, UAM pitchers Katie Slaughter combined for a 2-0 shutout, the team’s fourth shutout victory of the season. Slaughter (5-1) allowed six hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the first six innings to get credited with the win, while Perry entered the circle with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh and retired three straight batters to secure her second save of the year.

UAM plated both of its runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning on an RBI single from Huddleston and an RBI sacrifice fly out from senior Preslie Long.

The Cotton Blossoms and Crimson Storm closed out the four-game series on Sunday with a double-header at Blossoms Field.
