Blossoms Set For Tech, Harding

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas-Monticello women’s basketball team is set to close out the regular season playing three of four games on the tv_sports 10dbroad, starting this Thursday, Feb. 21 in Russellville against Great American Conference leader Arkansas Tech.

   The Cotton Blossoms enter the game with an overall record of 5-17 and a 2-14 record in conference games, while Arkansas Tech is on a four-game winning streak with an overall record of 16-6 and a 13-3 mark in league games. UAM is coming off a 77-55 loss to Southern Nazarene this past Saturday on the road, while the Golden Suns most recently defeated Henderson State 68-62 on the road this past Saturday.

   Earlier this season in Monticello, ATU left Steelman Field House with a 70-63 win over UAM in a game that featured 12 lead changes and seven tie scores.

   UAM ranks ninth in the league in scoring (62.1 points per game) and seventh in scoring defense (68.2 points allowed per game). Freshman Jordan Goforth leads the way for the Cotton Blossoms, averaging 12.4 points per game.

   ATU ranks third in the league in scoring (72.5 points per game) and second in scoring defense (62.6 points allowed per game). Jessica Weatherford and Roselis Silva pace the Golden Suns, ranking fifth and seventh in the GAC, respectively, with averages of 15.9 and 14.7 points per outing.

   Thursday’s tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Tucker Coliseum.

   Saturday, the Cotton Blossoms welcome Harding to Monticello for the final home game of the 2012-13 season. Harding enters its Thursday night contest against Southern Arkansas with an overall record of 15-7 and an 11-5 mark in GAC games. The Lady Bisons are currently ranked fourth in the GAC standings. The Lady Bisons sport the league’s top scoring defense, allowing just 59.2 points per outing.

   In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Harding defeated UAM 77-59 in Searcy.

   Saturday’s tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
