tv_sports 10dbBENTONVILLE — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team went 1-1 on the third day of the 7-State Classic, losing 2-1 to Missouri Western and responding with a 5-3 win over Oklahoma Christian.

In the 2-1 loss to Missouri Western (6-2) the Cotton Blossoms plated its only run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from senior Randa Perry. But, with the bases loaded and no outs in the same inning, MWSU pitcher Jackie Bishop set down three straight UAM batters to end the threat.

The Griffons scored their two runs in the top of the third on an RBI single from Keri Lorbert, followed by a double-steal scoring Breanna Fleschner from third base and moving Michaela Stevenson to second.

Perry (4-3) took the loss for UAM in complete-game fashion, allowing both runs off four hits with four strikeouts and three walks, while Bishop (3-1) earned the win for MWSU, also in complete-game style, allowing just one run off five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

In the 5-3 win over Oklahoma Christian (4-3), the Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles from Kendra Pierce and Martha Thomas before UAM answered with five runs over the next three innings.

Freshman Cassidy Wilson picked up an RBI-fielder’s choice in the second, Perry notched a two-run single in the third, senior Beth Johnson followed with an RBI sacrifice fly out in the third, while freshman Kali Piha tallied an RBI single in the fourth.

Oklahoma Christian finalized the scoring in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Courtney Starr followed by an RBI single from Pierce.

The Eagles threatened in the seventh, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, but Perry relived starter Katie Slaughter to strike out the final batter and seal the win. Slaughter (3-1) earned the win, allowing three runs off 13 hits with two strikeouts and one walk in the first 6.2 innings. Perry picks up her first save of the season after stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh.

UAM left a total of 11 runners on base, including a pair of bases-loaded situations.

The Cotton Blossoms improve to 9-5 overall and close out the 7-State Classic on Sunday against Concordia-St. Paul and Emporia State.
