Forge’s Last-Second Jumper Lifts Weevils Over SNU

tv_sports 10dbBETHANY, Okla. — Senior Kori Forge hit a jump shot with one second remaining in regulation to give the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team a 53-52 victory over Southern Nazarene on the road Saturday in Great American Conference action.

   Down eight points with two and a half minutes remaining in regulation, the Boll Weevils (14-8, 9-7 GAC) closed out the game on a 9-0 scoring surge to steal a road victory and complete the season sweep over the Crimson Storm (13-10, 8-9 GAC). UAM defeated SNU 72-56 on January 10 in Monticello.

   Forge was responsible for seven of the final nine points scored during UAM’s surge in the last two minutes of the contest. Forge hit a jumper to start the run, and nailed a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining to cut SNU’s lead to one points at 52-51 before hitting the go-ahead shot with one second on the clock. Senior A.J. Calhoun forced a turnover on SNU’s game-winning attempt to seal the win.

   Junior Josh Gibson added a layup off a turnover at the 2:05 mark to trim SNU’s lead to four points.

   UAM led by as much as eight points in the first half following an 8-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Forge at the 11:43 mark. SNU immediately responded with a 13-2 scoring run over the next four minutes to give the Crimson Storm a three-point lead.

   After a back-and-forth exchange over the course of four minutes, UAM junior Brandon Sims hit a jumper with 42 seconds remaining to finalize the first-half scoring, sending the teams into the locker room at the break tied 23-all.

   UAM scored the first five points of the second half for its largest lead of the half. SNU responded with a 9-2 run to take a two-point lead at the 15:04 mark. From that point, SNU never trailed until the final second of regulation.

   As a team, UAM shot 42 percent from the field (20-of-48), 42 percent on three-pointers (5-of-12) and 62 percent on foul shots (8-of-13). SNU shot 37 percent from the field (18-of-49), 25 percent on three-pointers (6-of-24) and 56 percent on foul shots (10-of-18).

   Forge led the Weevils with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Dayton Mickens also reached double-digits with 12 points, and led the team with eight rebounds.

   SNU’s Quan Conner led all scorers with 23 points.

   The Boll Weevils are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 21 on the road against Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.
