Weevils Calm Storm In Overtime, 74-67

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — Senior Kori Forge outscored the entire Southeastern Oklahoma State team in the overtime period to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team to a 74-67 victory over the Savage Storm at home Thursday night in Great American Conference action.

   The Boll Weevils (12-8, 7-7 GAC) were outscored 34-27 in the second half, but Forge finalized his 31-point performance by going for seven points in the extra five minutes to help UAM outscore Southeastern (11-9, 7-7 GAC) 12-5 in overtime.

   The regulation periods featured a tale of two halves. UAM led by as much as 11 points in the first 20 points, before Southeastern grabbed as much as a six-point lead in the final seven minutes of the second half. Following that six-point lead for the Savage Storm, UAM posted an 8-2 scoring run to force the game’s fourth tie on a three-pointer from Forge at the 2:27 mark. Forge struck again from three-point range, this time with 56 seconds remaining to give UAM a two-point lead.

   Southeastern’s Steven Kohli sunk a layup on the other end with 33 seconds remaining, allowing UAM to attempt the final shot. UAM junior Brandon Sims missed a jumper with two seconds remaining, but senior A.J. Calhoun quickly grabbed the rebound and was fouled on his way back to the basket with 1.1 seconds remaining.

   Calhoun missed both free throws to send the game into overtime.

   UAM made 3-of-4 field goal attempts in the overtime period, while adding five points at the free-throw line. Southeastern was limited to a 1-for-7 outing in overtime to allow UAM to even the season series between the two squads. Southeastern defeated UAM 67-61 earlier this season in Durant, Okla.

   Forge collected his third 30-point game of the season going 10-for-19 from the field, 5-of-11 on three-pointers and 6-for-9 on foul shots. He also led the team in rebounding (9) and assists (5). Junior Ramon Mejia followed with 13 points in a 35-minute outing coming off the bench. Junior Dayton Mickens and Sims each added 12 points in the win.

   Steven Kohli led Southeastern with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Matueus Oliveira also recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

   The Boll Weevils are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 at home against East Central. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
