Bulldogs Pull Away Late In Win Over Cotton Blossoms

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas-Monticello women’s basketball team suffered an 81-67 loss at home to Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Great American Conference action.tv_sports 10db

   The Cotton Blossoms (4-14, 2-11 GAC) erased a 13-point deficit in the first half to take a one-point lead at the 12:49 mark of the second half, but the Bulldogs (15-4, 10-3 GAC) responded with a 16-2 scoring run to recapture a double-digit lead with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.

   UAM immediately responded with a 7-0 scoring run over the next three minutes to pull to within six points, but that was as close as the team would get. The Bulldogs outscored UAM 17-9 in the final six minutes to seal the victory. The Bulldogs outscored UAM 43-31 in the second half after only leading by two points (38-36) at halftime.


   Similarly to UAM’s first matchup with SWOSU this season, the Bulldogs used three-pointers to keep their distance. SWOSU hit 10-of-28 treys and also took advantage of UAM’s 17 offensive mistakes with 19 points off turnovers.


   As a team, UAM shot 41 percent from the field (26-of-64), 18 percent on three-pointers (2-of-11) and 62 percent on foul shots (13-of-21). SWOSU finished at 46 percent from the field (28-of-61), 36 percent on three-pointers (10-of-28) and 79 percent on foul shots (15-of-19).


   UAM freshman guard Jordan Goforth continued her impressive play as of late by recording a career-high 24 points, while also adding nine rebounds to her final totals. Goforth was 8-of-17 from the field, 1-of-3 on treys and 7-of-8 at the foul line. Junior Ashley Qualls followed with 12 points, while junior Raija McWright and freshman Donlicia James each added 11 points off the bench. James recorded a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her point total for her fourth double-double of the season.


   Michelle Fisher led SWOSU’s five double-digit scorers with a total of 19 points.


   The Cotton Blossoms are back in action next Thursday, Feb. 7 at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
