tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas-Monticello men’s basketball team shot a season low 27 percent from the field in a 72-67 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State at home on Thursday night.

UAM (11-7, 6-6 GAC) finished the night with 19 made field goals on a season-high 70 attempts. UAM was also limited to a season-low two three-pointers on 20 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Boll Weevils were forced to play from behind for the majority of the contest, only holding a lead on three possessions in the first 20 minutes and just once in the final half.

The Rangers (9-8, 7-4 GAC) pulled away in the final 11 minutes, outscoring UAM 12-1 over a period of five minutes to hold an 11-point lead at the 5:25 mark on a fast break layup from Daryl Glover.

UAM fought back with a 13-3 scoring over the next four minutes to pull to within one point with 1:46  remaining in regulation. The Boll Weevils were sent to the foul line five times in the final two minutes, but the team missed four attempts to prevent a last minute comeback. Junior Ramon Mejia hit one of UAM’s two three-pointers with five seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three points, but NWOSU’s Marshall Bell answered with a pair of free throws on the other end to finalize the scoring.

UAM was outrebounded overall in the contest 47-46, but the Boll Weevils doubled NWOSU’s offensive rebound total, which led by 23 second chance points. The Rangers post game and depth production proved to be noticeable advantages, leading the points in the paint category 34-18 and the bench scoring category 34-9.

The Rangers shot 46 percent from the field (26-of-56), 31 percent on three-pointers (5-of-16) and 79 percent at the foul line (15-of-19).

Junior Brandon Sims tied his career high and tied for the game-high with 19 points, while adding a game-high 15 rebounds for his first career double-double. Senior Kori Forge added 17 points and junior Dayton Mickens produced a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

NWOSU’s Marshall Bell tied Sims with 19 points off the bench. Brandon Wooley and Daryl Glover also reached double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Boll Weevils are back in action this Saturday, Feb. 2 at home against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
