Blossoms Begin 5-Game Homestand

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team begins a five-game home stand this Thursday, Jan. 31 against Northwestern Oklahoma State in Great American Conference action.

   The Cotton Blossoms (3-13, 1-10 GAC) are coming off a 1-1 week, which featured the team’s first conference win of the season, a 78-65 victory over Southern Arkansas at home last Thursday and a 70-63 loss to Henderson State on Saturday on the road.

   UAM enters this week’s slate ranked ninth in the league in scoring offense (62.1 points per game) and seventh in scoring defense (68.6 points per game allowed). UAM has seen consistent improvement from freshman Jordan Goforth and sophomore Catherine Puckett over the past four games. Goforth currently leads the team with an average of 10.7 points per game, while Puckett is coming off back-to-back double-digit performances with 15 points in the win over SAU and 14 points in the loss to HSU.

   UAM’s first opponent of the week is Northwestern Oklahoma State (4-12, 3-7 GAC), a team that has lost its last three games, including a 78-41 setback to Southwestern Oklahoma State this past Saturday at home. The Lady Rangers rank 10th in the league in scoring (55.9 points per game) and third in the league in scoring defense (63 points allowed per game).

   In the first meeting of the year, NWOSU defeated UAM 63-46 on Dec. 1 in Alva, Okla. This Thursday’s tipoff against NWOSU is set for 5:30 p.m.

   On Saturday, UAM hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State for a 2 p.m. tipoff inside Steelman Field House. SWOSU heads to Southern Arkansas on Thursday with an overall record of 13-4 overall and an 8-3 record in conference games. The Bulldogs have won their last four games, including a 78-41 victory over NWOSU last Saturday in Alva, Okla.

   SWOSU is the GAC’s leading scoring team by far with an average of 81.6 points per game, led by three players averaging in double-figures. Michelle Fisher leads SWOSU and ranks fourth in the GAC with an average of 16.9 points per game.

   In the first meeting of the year, SWOSU beat UAM 77-66 in Weatherford, Okla. on Nov. 29. The Bulldogs hit 11 three-pointers in that game, and the team leads the GAC from three-point range having made 147-of-410 attempts throughout the year. No other team in the league has attempted more than 304 treys this year.
