Blossoms Beat SAU

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas-Monticello women’s basketball team snapped a 12-game losing streak and captured its first Great American tv_sports 10dbConference victory of the season in a 78-65 win over Southern Arkansas at home Thursday night.

   The Cotton Blossoms (3-12, 1-9 GAC) controlled most of the first half, holding a double-digit lead for the final nine minutes of the opening period. UAM began building its lead at the 15:35 mark of the first half, outscoring SAU (0-15, 0-10 GAC) 20-4 over the next five minutes to grab a 15-point lead of 25-10 with 10:15 remaining in the first half.

   That 15-point advantage was UAM’s biggest margin in the first half, but the Cotton Blossoms scored the first 12 points of the second half to grab a 26-point lead with 16:01 remaining in regulation. UAM’s second-half lead grew to as much as 28 points three minutes later on a layup from freshman Nikki Mullen at the 13:52 mark.

   UAM maintained its 20-point lead until the 8:58 mark of the second half, when SAU used a 13-5 scoring run to pull to within 16 points on a pair of free-throws from Stevi Cooper with 5:34 remaining.

   SAU’s Kathryn Odom made four free-throws in the last two minutes to trim UAM’s lead to the final margin of 13 points.

   UAM forced 34 SAU miscues, leading to 37 points off turnovers. The Cotton Blossoms also had a commanding lead in bench scoring, receiving 34 points from the non-starters, including an 11-point effort from freshman Donlicia James.

   Sophomore Catherine Puckett led UAM with 15 points, highlighted by a perfect 8-for-8 performance on foul shots. Freshman Jordan Goforth added 12 points and six rebounds in her 22 minutes of action.

   As a team, UAM shot 44 percent from the field (24-of-54), 25 percent on three-pointers (2-of-8) an 76 percent on foul shots (28-of-37). SAU shot 40 percent from the field (21-of-53), 33 percent on three-pointers (3-of-9) and 65 percent on foul shots (20-of-31).

   SAU’s Katherine McBride led all scorers with 20 points.

   The Cotton Blossoms return to action this Saturday, Jan. 26 on the road against Henderson State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.
