Blossoms Fall To Lady Reddies On The Road

tv_sports 10dbARKADELPHIA – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team suffered a 70-63 loss to Henderson State on Saturday on the road in Great American Conference action.

   After trailing by eight points with 14 minutes remaining in regulation, the Cotton Blossoms (3-13, 1-10 GAC) pulled to within two points of the Lady Reddies (10-7, 5-6 GAC) with 7:49 remaining. HSU immediately responded with a 15-4 scoring run to hold a 13-point lead with 2:32 remaining.

   UAM was able to trim the deficit back to within single digits on a three-pointer from freshman Nikki Mullen and a three-point play from junior Ashley Qualls with three seconds remaining in regulation.

   In the first half, UAM scored the first four points before HSU responded with a 14-2 scoring run to take an eight-point lead at the 12:31 mark of the opening period. The Lady Reddies led for the remainder of the first half, holding as much as a 10-point advantage at the 7:33 mark.

   As a team, UAM shot 39 percent from the field (22-of-56), 33 percent on three-pointers (4-of-12) and 75 percent on foul shots (15-of-20). HSU shot 53 percent from the field (26-of-49), 29 percent on three-pointers (4-of-14) and 64 percent on foul shots (14-of-22).

   Sophomore Catherine Puckett led UAM in scoring with 14 points, while adding five rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior Ashley Qualls followed with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.

   HSU’s Destiny Smith led all scorers with 29 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds.

   The Cotton Blossoms are back in action next Thursday, Jan. 31 at home against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Fieldhouse.
