Weevils Beat SAU For 8th Double-Digit Victory

tv_sports 10dbMONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team closed out the first half of Great American Conference games with a 72-59 win over Southern Arkansas at home on Thursday night.

   The Boll Weevils (10-6, 5-5 GAC) hit the 80 percent mark in free-throw shooting for the first time in conference games on Thursday against SAU (6-10, 2-8 GAC), making a season-high 20 free throws on 25 attempts. UAM won the rebounding battle 38-30 against SAU, which was leading the conference in rebounding margin heading into Thursday’s game.

   UAM controlled second half, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the final 15 minutes. The Boll Weevils used a 21-7 scoring run over a period of four minutes to grab its largest lead of 21 points with 7:23 remaining in regulation. SAU immediately responded with a 10-3 run to pull to within 14 points with 5:14 remaining. SAU outscored UAM 9-6 in the final four minutes of the second half, but was not enough to keep UAM from capturing its eighth double-digit win of the season.

   In the first half, the Boll Weevils held an eight point lead at the 12:52 mark following a 6-0 scoring run capped by a layup from senior A.J. Calhoun from the pass of junior Jamal Nixon. SAU rallied to force the game’s first tie at the 6:50 mark of the opening period following a 12-5 run over the previous six minutes. UAM responded by capturing its largest lead of the half at nine points on a layup from senior Deric Corbin at the 2:08 mark to cap a 9-0 run.

   For the game, UAM shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-54) and 40 percent on three-pointers (6-of-15). SAU shot 35 percent from the field (18-of-51), 24 percent on three-pointers (4-of-17) and 76 percent on foul shots (19-of-25).

   Senior Kori Forge scored a game-high 29 points on a 7-of-15 shooting performance, including a 4-of-7 night on three-pointers. Forge finalized his scoring with an 11-of-12 outing at the charity stripe. Calhoun recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while junior Dayton Mickens added 10 points and five rebounds.

   Darrin Johnson led SAU with 15 points off the bench.

   The Boll Weevils are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 26 on the road against Henderson State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.
