Blossoms Fall One Point Short In Loss To HSU

tv Sports reflection 10dbMONTICELLO – After trimming the deficit to just one point with 40 seconds remaining in regulation, Henderson State’s Shareka Maner hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to give the Lady Reddies a four-point lead, ultimately too large of a lead for the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team to overcome in a 51-50 loss to HSU on Thursday at home.

   UAM’s Raija McWright hit a free-throw with two seconds remaining and Donlicia James added a put-back jumper off McWright’s missed second free-attempt to finalize the scoring.

   Following a 36-all tie with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second half, HSU (4-2, 2-1 Great American Conference) posted a 10-2 scoring run to grab a 46-38 lead with 7:16 remaining. UAM (2-5, 0-3 GAC) responded with a 9-2 run to get to within one point before Maner’s eventual game-winning shot.

   After a 25-all tie at the halftime break, UAM grabbed its first lead of the game since the first three minutes with a 7-4 scoring spurt in the first four minutes of the second half to take a three-point lead of 32-29 at the 16:20 mark following a fast-break layup from Candace Virgadamo.

   HSU responded with a 10-4 run to recapture the lead for the final time, leading by as much as eight points twice throughout the final 10 minutes before UAM used its run to climb back to within one point in the final minute.

   As a team, UAM shot 39 percent from the field (18-of-46), 29 percent on three-pointers (2-of-7) and 80 percent at the free-throw line (12-of-15). HSU shot 38 percent from the field (21-of-55), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-of-20) and 50 percent on foul shots (3-of-6).

   Freshman Donlicia James led UAM with 11 points and eight rebounds. Virgadamo also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points, while adding three assists and two steals to her final totals.

   HSU’s Destiny Smith led all players with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Jill Temples added 11 points for the Lady Reddies.

   The Cotton Blossoms are back in action this Saturday, Dec, 8 at home against Ouachita Baptist. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Fieldhouse.
